Shit no one cares about
Some of you have been clamoring for a dedicated raid board for Net Neutrality. Your wish is my command.
*POOF*
As 888chan grows and adds more imageboards and users, it has become necessary for me to clarify my vision in regards to the overall functionality of this website, especially in regards to r9k bans, the roles of /gd/ and /td/, and where users come into play in terms of helping to moderate the website.
My basic idea with 888chan is to design a system that:
1) is easy to moderate,
2) can survive its complete success, i.e., that a huge influx of new users won't adversely affect the quality of the community or website, and
3) gives users a reason to donate to the site without adversely affecting the chemistry of the community, i.e., without creating a privileged class or designating VIP boards where only donors can post, etc.
Why r9k on (almost) every board?
Many of you have already noticed, either the easy way or the hard way, that many of the boards have r9k rules enabled. Currently the only boards where r9k isn't enabled are /td/, /p/, and /w/.
The concept is fairly simple: by enforcing robot bans based on previous content, users will be forced to lurk moar, think, be creative, and post original content. Forced memes, copypasta, and flooding are also discouraged in this way.
In addition, the type of users who would want to post immediately without lurking moar will probably learn about r9k the hard way. Either these users will lurk moar, read the Rules and FAQ, and actually understand how the site works, or they will get bored/frustrated and leave. However, my hope is that the overall quality of the community will entice new users to want to stay and lurk moar.
More intelligent users will lurk moar in the first place and understand how to post a completely original thought to begin with. In this way I hope to attract more intelligent users to the community without it suffering from the common newfag cancer problem that many imageboards experience (except in /td/, which is essentially meant to be unmoderated and filled with aids, cancer, drama, faggotry, and fail.)
Donating for r9k exemptions
In addition, starting today, those who donate to 888chan can now have their IP's placed on the r9k exemption whitelist. These r9k exemptions can be purchased for $1 per month or $10 per year, by licking the ling and donating:
When you donate, please include the IP you wish to be whitelisted in the optional email message. In addition, please state whether your IP is static or dynamic.
Again, the concept is simple: users who are willing to donate to 888chan and see it continue to survive are more likely to post creative and original content in the first place.
Users who are unable or choose not to donate can still post. The only price they have to pay is the time and effort it takes to compose a complete thought, which is really the only way to be certain your comment is original in the sense of never having been posted before on 888chan.
Posts such as "^ this" or "Agreed" or "Pic Related" will probably cause the poster to be b& by r9k. However, if the user were to phrase the post as follows: "I agree with >>12345 for the following reasons, etc.", he or she will have no problems with r9k at all.
Clarifying /gd/ and /td/
At this time I would also like to simplify the guidelines for posting in /gd/ and clarify the differences between /gd/ and /td/.
/td/ is essentially the anti-/b/. I take it for granted that /td/ will contain aids, cancer, drama, faggotry, fail posting, copypasta, old or forced memes, etc., because the intent is for it to be unmoderated. In this way such an ocean of piss and jenkem will be created that no one would want a good thread to go there.
Conversely, it'll be the perfect place for shitty threads to go, and will help keep the faggotry contained in one place. Paradoxically, /td/ will probably be the favorite and most used board on 888chan, much like the Thunderdome on WWP.
/gd/ on the other hand is essentially meant to be an off-topic random-esque board, but without any inter-site or namefag drama, copypasta, old or forced memes. You are strongly encouraged to post complete, original thoughts in /gd/ so as to avoid the r9k ban. If your post looks vapid, meaningless, retarded, or cancerous, you might be b&. Otherwise, anything goes. The rules page has been updated accordingly.
As for the threads themselves, it's ultimately up to the users whether a shitty thread falls into the Sarlac pit known as the Dome. "dome" goes in the email field. You the users have the power to make 888chan win or fail.
tl;dr
888chan is (hopefully) the cure for the common *chan.
Now of course, I could just be a complete moron about all of this, so please tell me what you think about my ideas here: http://888chan.org/gd/res/12013.html
inb4: STFU, DIAF r3x, kill yourself, what is this faggotry, bawww, etc.
This week I present the new /a/ - Animu and Mango imageboard. Robot bans are enabled, "robo" is disabled, and dome thresholds are 3 posts and 20%.
In other news, the Minnesota Anons now have their very own imageboard, /imn/ - Minnesota Insurgency, featuring the new Snowy Hills CSS Theme.
Each weekend I give you something new; this weekend is no different. Today I introduce the new /w/ - Wallpaper imageboard, featuring the Redwood stylesheet. "robo" and Robot bans are disabled. Cheers.
888chan's IRC channel is moving permanently to AnonNET IRC. You can connect to AnonNET at irc://irc.anonnet.org/. Join us in #888chan!
888chan has opened four new imageboards tonight. I'll give you the rundown.
First, introducing a new General Interest imageboard, /sff/ - Science Fiction and Fantasy. This board features the new Cloud City stylesheet. R888-Y bans are enabled, dome and robo thresholds are 3 posts and 20%.
Next up a local imageboard for the Deutschfags, /ide/ - German Insurgency, featuring the new Germany stylesheet.
Next we have /ire/ - Irish Insurgency, featuring the new Ireland stylesheet.
Last but certainly not least I present to you /isf/ - San Francisco Insurgency, featuring the new Rainbow stylesheet.
With the opening of the Las Vegas Insurgency imageboard, 888chan is now offering local imageboards to all local Anon cells that want one. Local cells can use their imageboard to plan and organize events or raids, or to just have fun, all compeletely anonymously and hopefully without the drama that goes with every Anon having a consistent nickname on a message board.
The conditions for having and keeping a local imageboard are as follows:
- The board must be moderated by a member of that local cell. The moderator must necessarily be a tripfag. However, he or she will simply be a janitor; moderating will not be a position of leadership. Abuse of modship, such as giving out IP's, editing/deleting posts for no reason, will not be tolerated.
- The board must be active. Use it or lose it.
- Members of that local cell can help decide the look and feel of their board by designing custom stylesheets and submitting banners, as in /td/.
- IRL raids/events do not have to be limited to Chanology.
- Have a vote among your hivemind and pick a mod you can trust (probably someone who mods your local board). Have them email me at rex(dot)lawlson(at)gmail(dot)com for further details.
- Make a custom stylesheet for the imageboard. You can do this easily by saving this page as "Web page, complete" in Firefox, and editing a stylesheet accordingly. Make sure the stylesheet works on the 888chan frontpage as well.
- Make three 400 x 400 banner images that best represent your local cell. Look at the banners in /td/ or /i/ for ideas.
- ????
- PROFIT!
The local imageboard for the Las Vegas Insurgency is now live with the new Las Vegas theme, at /ilv/. Be sure to give the Las Vegas Anons a warm welcome. :D
Conrad is no longer a moderator. That is all.
New General Discussion rules have been posted, check em out here.
For the first week, I've allowed /gd/ to go pretty much unmoderated in order to allow users to get used to it. However, we are going to start moderating /gd/ more strictly in order to allow decent discussion to take place. If your post is an obvious troll or does not contribute constructively to the thread, expect your post to be deleted and to be banned for a day. Repeat offenders may be banned for longer periods of time.
Also, I'd like you all to welcome Conrad to the moderation team. He will be helping moderate /gd/.
The /xenu/ - Project Chanology board you have all been waiting for is now live, available with the new Black Omen stylesheet.
/i/ - Internet 8 Machine is now for general purpose raids/insurgency ops.
/xenu/ is for dox, leaks, and raids related to Project Chanology, discussion of long term strategy, planning of irl raids/protests, both local and global, and irl raid reports.
/xenu is for those of you who have been waiting for a way to participate in Chanology planning completely anonymously, without being forced to deal with namefags. You can help make it a success by helping to plan for the November global raid. Throw ideas out there, be creative, and make your voice heard. Help bring Project Chanology back to the *chans.
I have moved all Chanology-related threads to /xenu/. If you're looking for a thread, it's probably there now.
The 888chan IRC server is up again, at irc.888chan.org.
Yes, the IRC server is down. Use irc.anonnet.org for the time being while we figure out wtf is going on.
R888-Y's training is complete, and he's now ready for the bigtime. We've made some changes to Robo so that now he collects a cache of all posts on 888chan, even on boards on which Robo b&'s aren't enforced.
The /r8y/ - R888-Y board has now become the new /gd/ - General Discussion board. As always, what it becomes will be determined by the Anonymous masses, but I'd like to think it will become a place where people can discuss news, politics, philosophy, and academic/intellectual topics, as well as whatever comes to mind.
R888-Y b&'s will now be enforced on /i/ - Internet 8 Machine and /gd/ - General Discussion.
With the addition of /gd/ comes a new Green Dream stylesheet, which is set as the default stylesheet on /gd/.
If users think a thread is good, but in the wrong place, they can send it to /gd/ with the new robo feature, by typing "robo" in the email field. The "robo" command is currently enabled on /i/ and /td/.
"Sage" will now kill a thread in 5 sages on any board.
The Rules and FAQ have been updated accordingly.
At this time I would like to introduce a board I know you all have been awaiting eagerly.
Dump your whole porn collection on there, fill that shit up.
Second, if you look to the lefthand side of your screen, you will see the new Overchanology section, containing links to all central hubs and local sites related to Project Chanology. If you see a broken link or have a link to add, find me in #888chan and tell me about it.
Lastly, Running this site ain't cheap. If you like what we're doing, if it is relevant to your interests and you would like to subscribe to our newsletter, well, we don't have a newsletter, but we do have a paypal account that is desparately low on jewgolds. A simple donation of $5, $10, or $20 can help ensure that the website and community you love will continue to grow and flourish.
Click the ling.
Gentlemen, I give you yet another new theme, which I dub "Zeal."
Enjoy.
First off, 888chan now has it's very own IRC network, 8 Ball IRC, a network by and for Anons. More info on the IRC page.
I cleaned up the frontpage stylesheet drastically and merged it with the stylesheets for the imageboards, so that you now have 3 stylesheets to choose from both on the frontpage and each imageboard. I also made the lefthand navbar blocks collapsible. Damn that shit looks sexy.
I made some changes to the imageboards as follows:- Threads per page increased to 15 on /td/.
- Maximum filesize increased to 2048 KB on all boards.
- Maximum image size increased to 250 x 250 pixels on all boards.
At this time I would like to introduce to you a brand new imageboard, /r8y/ - R888-Y. On this board, R888-Y, your new robot overlord, rules with an iron fist. If you make a post that is a duplicate of a previous r8y post, you will be banned for 2^n seconds, n being the number of times you've been banned. The ban count goes down gradually. If you attempt to test or circumvent R888-Y, you will be b& by the moderators. The purpose of r8y is to facilitate decent discussion.
On the other hand, users may have noted that with previous implementations of the Robot9000 script, threads tend to take on a particularly virulent form of cancer and aids. Thus, I give you the users a means by which you can apply chemo to cancer whenever you see it.
Simply by typing "dome" in the email field, users can by their combined efforts send a shitty thread to /td/ to get trolled or otherwise sagebombed. Dome works like sage, except in addition to debumping a thread, it will send the thread to /td/ if enough users from unique IP's dome a thread. The threshold for sending a thread to /td/ can be set according to number, percentage, or both. For example, it could take 5 "domes" or 20% percent of all posts from unique IP's being a "dome" to send it to /td/.
Depending on your point of view, this could be a good or bad thing for a thread. Either way, it was made for your enjoyment.
As always, thank you for playing the game.
I added a page for 888chan TV, powered by Mogulus, at /8tv/. It was supposed to have an embedded chat applet, but apparently Partyvan IRC b& it. :( In any case, the channel 888chan TV viewers is #888chan.
As a side note, I sexied up frontpage stylesheet a bit.
I also added a new Redwood theme to /td/ for your enjoyment.
Tonight there will be a maintenance window between 3:00AM PST and 4:00AM PST. During this time we will be backing up the board and performing database maintenance.
Sorry for the SQL Error's earlier today; they're fixed now.
And now, introducing to you, 888chan's very own /i/ board, the Internet 8 Machine, available with a new Marcabian theme, which is also available in /td/.
Dox and raids go in /i/ from now on.
Tired of threads disappearing when they die? Now you can enjoy them forever with the new /td/ Archive.
Also, I went ahead and made a separate Thunderdome theme and restored the Futaba theme to its original version.
I was rather overwhelmed by all the outstanding submissions for the /td/ Banner Contest. So, I went and set up a rotating banner script, displaying the six best images. Thank you to everyone who submitted a banner.
Feel free to submit more banners if you're feeling creative.
I'm taking submissions for a /td/ banner. The banner must be 400x400 pixels, and batshit crazy. Do it faggots.
What happens when some ThunderDome trolls go and create a chan? Well, this is it.
Let The Game Begin.
